Food notes

  • At seafood markets, confirm prices and processing fees before ordering.
  • White-cut preparation and the calamansi-garlic dipping sauce are central to Wenchang chicken.
  • Qingbuliang varies by shop; coconut milk, grains, fruit and jellies form the base.
  • Qionghai’s colourful grain pastries and Xinglong’s Southeast Asian snacks reward slow browsing.
  • A shorter three-day version: Haikou → Wenchang → Sanya.

  • Shimei Bay is often comfortable for simple sand play; always watch current sea warnings.
  • Book age-appropriate, accredited surf instruction if trying a lesson.

Cultural highlights

  • Haikou’s qilou arcades reflect exchange among Hainan, Southeast Asia and other maritime cultures.
  • Traditional Li textile techniques are UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage.
  • Tattoo traditions must be presented with consent and dignity, never as spectacle.
  • Sanyuesan, on the third day of the third lunar month, is an important Li and Miao festival.
  • Dongpo Academy recalls Su Shi’s years of teaching in Danzhou; the salt fields preserve long-used techniques.
  • Baicha boat-shaped houses in Dongfang are a distinctive Li architectural tradition.

  • Confirm current road access, charging or fuel stops, weather and insurance before departure.
  • November to April is often milder, but holiday traffic and local conditions still matter.
  • Hainan’s ring high-speed railway is an alternative between many cities.
